World Health Organization Raises Concern Over Acute Lack of Obesity Jabs

Less than one in 10 individuals eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy have access to them, caution the World Health Organization as it releases its initial guidance on the medications.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is advocating for broader and more equitable access to these injectable treatments.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidelines affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be treated with comprehensive and ongoing support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to widespread access to the jabs that can help people shift considerable weight, notes the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even in the present most optimistic scenario, the supply of such drugs could only cover approximately 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The advice calls on countries and companies to expand availability, by approaches including licensing agreements.

A patent on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Operate

These medications imitate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

Individuals usually start to lose weight after several weeks of beginning the weekly injections.

Studies points to patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the medication, when their usual hunger come back.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for developing health problems, like diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in every country and was associated with millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
