This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
