British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
