European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
